Hyderabad teens develop high-end tablet PC

A first year engineering student Sareddy Chiman Prakash and another young man Nikhil have come up with a Tablet PC named Ave which is priced at Rs 12,999.

Andhra Pradesh Information Technology and Communications Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah launched the gadget here on Sunday.

Prakash’s father's company,  Sareddy Technologies, based in the UK is manufacturing the gadget.

The Ave is a trendy Multipurpose Cyber Gadget powered by Android 2.3 Ginger Bread.
The 7-inch tablet with compatibility zoom mode and the tablet supports Micro SD cards of up to 32 GB suitable for requirements of people belonging to all ages and professions, right from video games to astrology, sports to science, trivia to the latest trends. “What impressed me is the price of the high end tablet PC.  To encourage these young men I even spoke with Union minister Kapil Sibal stressing the need to encourage such talent,” Ponnala said.

Chess champion

Chiman Prakash was state chess champion (under 7 years) when he was only 4 years old. He also won four bronze and three silver medals in national chess championships.  He stood fourth in the Commonwealth Chess Championship (under 12 years).  When he was in 8th standard he started a gaming website and further developed into Gameshoppe.com. He tried to reduce the cost of the games by utilising Java and direct gaming without the need of Xbox.

Two arrested for Delhi fire, compensation announced

NEW DELHI: A contractor and an electrician were arrested today in connection with the fire at an east Delhi community hall during a transgender meet which left 14 people dead even as the city government announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to the next of kin of those killed.

The arrests came after police registered a case of causing death due to negligence in the incident at Nand Nagri in which 30 people were also injured. Sources said the organisers had not taken requisite permission from fire brigade and police for holding the meeting and a case has been registered against them.

"We have arrested Sanjay Aggarwal (38), the contractor, and an electrician Sher Singh," a senior police official said.

Police had suspected a short circuit to be the cause of fire. Delhi government has ordered a thorough probe into the fire incident.

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who visited the injured at the GTB Hospital along with health minister A K Walia, said a compensation of Rs two lakh each will be given to the next of kin of those killed in the fire.

The seriously injured will get Rs 50,000 each while those who have sustained minor injuries will get Rs 10,000 each. She also directed the hospital administration to take proper care of the injured.

The tents erected on the grounds of the community hall were completely gutted and the entire premises was engulfed in flames.

New Nano with a better fuel efficiency

Tata Motors has introduced the new Nano — touted as the people’s car, with a better fuel efficiency and more colour choices without changing the price. The 624- cc petrol engine-driven Nano now has an  Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) certified 25.4 kilometre per litre mileage as against the earlier 23.6 kmpl.

The car, considered as a volume puller is struggling in the market. The sales so far this year is 18% lower at 33,245 units.

Tata Motors has been pulling out all stops to lift the sales of the Nano, the cheapest car, which faced tough challenges such as the shift of manufacturing location, production at a makeshift facility and incidents of the car catching fire.

The company offered to install an additional safety protection in the car besides opening exclusive Nano sales points and recruiting additional sales people.
The launch of a revamped version is the latest in the series of such activities. What is now awaited is a diesel version of Nano, which is speculated to hit the market next year.

At 25.4 kmpl, Nano is the most fuel-efficient petrol car in India, Tata Motors claims. The company said that the Nano’s CO2 emission at 92.7 gm/km is the lowest among cars in India.

Despite additional features, Tata Motors did not revise the price of the car. The price of Nano will remain the same – Nano Standard (Rs 1.4 lakh), Nano CX (Rs 1.7 lakh) and Nano LX (Rs 1.96 lakh) , ex-showroom Delhi. With eight new colours, the Nano will be available in 10 colours including red, blue, orange, green and gold. Read more

Indian users are quite safe, says Facebook

Bangalore, Nov 18: Facebook, the hack-scarred networking site has declared that over 500 million users are quite safe and no need to worry about the hacking issue.

The hacking news on the world's most popular social networking site had panicked millions of Indian users and raised questions about Facebook's security measures.

However, the social networking site claimed that "security of users topped their list of priorities and no user accounts were compromised". They said that Indian users are quite safe and there is nothing to worry.

"Protecting Facebook users from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us. Users' photos are not being transferred to an unwanted sites and no accounts have been compromised.

"We are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms, and to take action against those responsible for these types of content," claimed a Facebook official.

Cyber security experts opined that vulnerability is there for all the sites on the Internet.

"To a very large extent it is the user who needs to be careful and fully aware of what he/she is sharing. There are some known problems that the social networking site has already addressed to safeguard user information, however, there are certain unknown problems that cannot be stopped," said Rohit Srivastwa, founder of a white-hacker club.

"For a website, it is not possible to track every single thing that is posted. User discretion is very important. Why just Facebook? Malicious content is sent to people via mail as well. In that case should we cast the blame on email providers and tell them to scan every single mail being sent to users?" asked Rohit.

"Facebook has shifted the blame on browser vulnerability. But it is time that the social networking site puts its foot down against malware and looks at ways to secure the site from such attacks.

"It is true that often such instances go unreported, making it difficult for the affected site to track down offenders. But it is equally important for the governments to understand that cybercrime is a global issue," said Vijay Mukhi, advisor of cyber security, Government of India.

"We need an international cyber crime resolution body to deal with such problems. Such problems won't end, whether it is this social networking site, or any other - unless a foolproof security mechanism is brought in place. Facebook too has issued a set of simple guidelines advising users to follow them to stay safe. Security is an issue everywhere online," suggested Facebook Security.

"It's important to be aware of the risks and learn how to protect your accounts and your computer. It is important to protect yourself from scams, viruses, and hacks that can infect your computer or take over your Facebook account, annoying and possibly harming you and your friends," it added.

A few colleges and private firms have blocked the social networking site to save their employees and students from any kind of embarrassment. Few companies have also blocked the site to avoid virus attack on their servers.

Meanwhile, a few advertising agencies claimed that the banning of these social networking sites are affecting their companies.

Overweight dads make for overweight kids

Children whose fathers are overweight are more likely to have weight troubles when they are older than other children of their age.

On the other hand, an overweight or obese mother makes little difference to the chances of her child developing weight problems.

A study of more than 3,000 families by researchers at the University of Newcastle, Australia found that 4-year-olds whose fathers were overweight or obese were at least four times more likely than other children to have weight problems by the time they were eight.

he research used data from more than 3,000, two-parent families, who were tracked from 2004 to 2008.

"We know that when both parents are overweight or obese, their children are more likely to also be overweight or obese," Fox News quoted researcher Emily Freeman as saying.

Fibbing on Facebook to be a crime soon

Washington, Nov 19: The United States Department of Justice is planning to introduce a new law to prosecute those who use fake names on the world's most popular social networking site - Facebook or those lying to someone in online dating websites.

Sources said that misdoing on social networking sites could be a federal crime under Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, 1986, an anti-hacking law passed long back before the emerging of social networking sites. Meanwhile, people are urging lawmakers to re-write the law and want the government to punish those online mischief makers same as to that of criminal hackers.

According to Fox News, with the new law, a person could be prosecuted for violating the user agreement in a social networking site under anti-hacking law. Critics of the law point most frequently to a section that imposes penalties on anyone who knowingly ‘exceeds authorized access’ on a computer to obtain information. Read more

Big B loves Bade Achhe Lagte Hain

Lead actors of popular serial Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar can boast of having a special fan as actor Amitabh Bachchan mentioned in his blog that he admires both the artists. “I had spoken about the serial I saw and the artists of which I admired

The serial was Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and the artists were Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar,” he wrote.

The on-screen couple came on popular Indian game show Kaun Banega Crorepati 5 that is hosted by Bachchan. The special episode will be aired in the upcoming weeks.

“Original, relaxed, meaningful and competent. Last night they (Kapoor and Tanwar) were down on the set of KBC and playing for a charity that was going to help the poor of cancer, and to be able to build a center for paraplegics. Such warmth and such a delight to be in their company,” Bachchan wrote in his blog.

“Natural, relaxed and without a glimmer of their star status, they seemed to have impressed all in their assessment of me,” he added.

Bade Achhe Lagte Hain  premiered on Sony TV on May 30. Read more

What happens behind the scenes of KBC

Watching Amitabh Bachchan at the top of his game on this season's Kaun Banega Crorepati has been one of this year's huge highs.

Watching the superstar on the KBC sets is a hugely entertaining thrill, as Rediff.com's A Ganesh Nadar discovered when he reported this feature, the never-before-told story of what really goes on when television's biggest show is being shot.

As the 2011 season of Kaun Banega Crorepati ends tonight, we bring back Ganesh's feature for everyone who missed it or wants to savour reading it again.

"Don't scratch your head, and don't scratch your nose. Remember, the cameras keep panning the audience at regular intervals and it will not look good," Raghav -- the show's director -- instructed the audience that had assembled to participate in India's most popular show on television, Panchkoti Mahamani Kaun Banega Karodpati.

Film City in Goregaon (east), is a distant suburb of Mumbai, a hilly region with lots of greenery. It is also isolated from the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps.

The studio was already packed on a Saturday morning at 11 am. One of the organisers pointed out that they don't pay the audience because everyone was there to see Amitabh Bachchan. Agreed! You don't need to be paid to see the living legend.

There were about 250 people in the audience. In one of the front rows were four people in white dhotis and white shirts. Raghav was disappointed. "This will show all white on camera, you must move them to different locations and not all together." Read more

Vidya Balan set to steal Emraan's serial kisser tag?

Actor Emraan Hashmi has some tough competition these days. It seems his 'serial kisser' tag will soon be given to someone else. His opponent in the on screen lip lock war is none other than the sultry Vidya Balan. Vidya has shared some of the most sensational kisses on screen in recent times. From the romantic lip lock in the pouring rain with southern heartthrob R. Madhavan in Guru to the passionate kiss with Arshad Warsi in Ishqiya, she has done it all. Her latest pair up with Tusshar Kapoor in The Dirty Picture sees her planting a playful kiss on him. But ask her about who is a better kisser and Vidya turns the table on us, "The one I would really love to kiss is George Clooney." Vidya is making these bold comments to remain in sync with her on screen character in The Dirty Picture. But, when it comes to her attire she prefers the desi look. Vidya is known for her penchant of living the character she is playing. "As an actor, I have no limitations. I can play any character because I go deep inside the character. When I play a character I live her life. So much so that often I tend to forget the real me, which is a bad thing because I've fallen ill doing so. I still have to learn how to get out from the character," Vidya said. Seems she's literally living, eating and breathing Read more

When Aishwarya Rai Bachchan welcomed her baby

When Aishwarya Rai Bachchan welcomed her baby girl in the world yesterday, it made a big splash in India and abroad.

Ash has the distinction of being the most recognisable Indian face on the global cinematic platform -- she first emerged on the international scene when she was invited to join the prestigious Cannes film festival jury in 2001.

Bigger things followed. She became a brand ambassador for cosmetics giant L'Oreal and signed films like The Pink Panther alongside Steve Martin and The Last Legion with Colin Firth.

Her Hollywood career didn't exactly pan out the way everybody had hoped and of late, her international appearances have shrunk to the annual Cannes visits as the L'Oreol brand ambassador.

So it was a bit of a surprise when news media all around the world wrote copious reports about the actress's delivery. While many termed her 'Bollywood Royalty', one particular publication made an astute observation -- Bachchan baby is a Scorpion, like her mom! Read more

Cash-for-votes: Kulkarni, BJP ex-MPs out of jail

New Delhi: All the accused in the cash-for-votes scam including former BJP MPs Fagan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora and LK Advani's former aide Sudheendra Kulkarni walked out of the Tihar jail on Thursday, after they got bail on Wednesday.
After walking out of the jail, Mahaveer Bhagora said, "We never had any kind of problem in the jail. We will decide the future course of action later."
The Delhi High Court had on Wednesday granted bail to the three along with political activist Suhail Hindustani and former aide of MP Amar Singh Sanjeev Saxena in the 2008 cash-for-votes scam.
BJP MP Ashok Argal was granted anticipatory bail in the scam and will participate in the investigation as and when called for.
All the accused were asked to furnish a bond of Rs 2 lakh each.
Opposition MPs were allegedly bribed ahead of July 22, 2008 trust vote and three BJP MPs brandished bribe money in Lok Sabha to expose UPA.
However, The Delhi High Court made it clear that there is no scientific proof of tampering with video or audio of the cash-for-votes scam while grating bail to six accused in the case on Wednesday. Justice ML Mehta also said that there is no prima facie evidence on record of demands and receipt of illegal gratification by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ashok Argal and its former MPs Fagan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora in the case.
Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh was also granted bail in the case earlier in October.

Police arrest suspect in shooting that hit White House

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, 2011 (Reuters) — Police arrested a 21-year-old man on Wednesday suspected of shooting at the White House last week, after federal agents found two bullets that had hit the mansion, including one that struck a window

Oscar Ortega-Hernandez was picked up by Pennsylvania state troopers at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Secret Service said, some four hours drive time from Washington.

No one was hurt in the Friday night shooting and President Barack Obama and wife Michelle were out of town at the time.

The Secret Service said the bullet that broke a window was stopped by protective ballistic glass behind the executive mansion's historic external glass, said Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan. The other round struck the exterior of the building.

The rounds were found on the south side of the White House, where the master bedroom and the Lincoln bedroom of the presidential private residence are located, as well as other bedrooms and spaces that can be used by the first family.

Secret Service officers had heard shots fired on the street, between 700 and 800 yards (meters) south of the president's residence.

Two cars were seen racing away from that scene. One of those vehicles was later found abandoned nearby with a semi-automatic rifle on board.

At the time of the incident, the president was in California before heading to Hawaii.

The shooting was being investigated by the Secret Service as well as Washington and U.S. Parks police, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Ortega-Hernandez had a criminal background, including several drug and alcohol-related charges, as well resisting arrest and assault on a police officer, said U.S. Parks Police spokesman Sergeant David Schlosser.

Friday's shooting took place on Constitution Avenue, a busy public street adjacent to the National Mall. Uniformed Secret Service officers guard the area, which is also heavily patrolled by Washington and U.S. Parks police.

White House security was beefed up after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, when Pennsylvania Avenue along the north of the grounds was closed to traffic.

But the mansion, which is open to tours, remains close to public spaces to allow the city's many visitors a good view. This proximity has been exploited in the past.

In 2001, a former accountant who worked for the Inland Revenue Service fired shots outside the White House. Read more

Two sunken islands 'discovered in Indian Ocean'

MELBOURNE: Scientists claim to have discovered two huge sunken islands in the Indian Ocean, which once formed part of the last link between India and Australia.

A team from Sydney University, Macquarie University and the University of Tasmania say the two islands, about the size of Tasmania, were once part of the supercontinent Gondwana and are more than 1.5 kilometres underwater.

They say the islands, discovered west of Australia, were once above water. The discovery was made while the scientists were mapping the seafloor of the Perth Abyssal Plain.

"The data collected on the voyage could significantly change our understanding of the way in which India, Australia and Antarctica broke off from Gondwana," University of Sydney geologist Dr Joanne Whittaker, a team member, said.

The scientists returned to Perth last week after carrying out the complicated task of dredging up hundreds of kilogrammes of rock samples from the steep slopes of the two islands during a three-week expedition aboard a vessel.

Travelling on the Southern Surveyor, they discovered the islands through detailed seafloor mapping and by dredging rock samples from the steep slopes of the two islands, now in water depths of over 1.5 kilometres, the Australian media reported.

"We expected to see common oceanic rocks such as basalt in the dredge, but were surprised to see continental rocks such as granite, gneiss and sandstone containing fossils," Dr Simon Williams, the chief scientist on the expedition, said.

He added: "A detailed analysis of the rocks dredged up during the voyage will tell us about their age and how they fit into the Gondwana jigsaw."

The islands, called "micro continents", were formed when India began to move away from Australia, 130 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. They became stranded thousands of kilometres from either coast as the land masses separated, say the scientists.
